Thanks Mark and Ivan. I had thought the cropping was a failing, nice to hear it works.
Came across the following recently in Philip Rawsons book, "Seeing through Drawing":
'..one can only contain the whole height of a human figure in a normal drawing if the person is placed at a virtual distance of more than 13 feet - far beyond the reach of our hands..
if the image is cut off by the edges of the paper, it suggests that the represented body is very close, within touching distance..'

And the cropping really works- I dig on the composition in the red one.
I really love the strong lines here, bold and direct. Colouring is great :-)
